This weekend marked the passing of renowned Luchador Silver King, A.K.A. César Cuauhtémoc González Barrón, who passed away from an alleged heart attack during the Greatest Show of Lucha Libre in London. Silver King gained notoriety in the nacho world in, if not the nacho film we deserve then at least the nacho film we have, “Nacho Libre” playing the villainous Ramses. Fellow Mexican wrestler El Hijo del Santo wrote on Twitter: "I deeply regret the death of my great rival and partner in so many battles. He went as he wanted: fighting." You don’t get much better a memorial tweet than that.
For a long time there wasn’t a great picture of Ignacio Anaya on the internet, so imagination ran wild. What would the man who created the greatest food of all time look like? A wild looking fellow like Pancho Villa? A dapper academic like Luis Buñuel? Or a mighty Luchador like Silver King? I settled on the Luchador, even more specifically Silver King as Ramses in Nacho Libre, and to this day I like that better than just the regular looking guy he was. It added a bit of mystery and flair to his character, and as tasty as nachos are, without a psychic figurehead like him I might not have gotten into them as deep as I did. So thank you.
Keep on fighting Silver King, they’ll never pin you in our hearts.
